What is the GDPR (GDPR) and how it affects your website

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the strictest privacy and security law in the world. Although it was drafted and approved by the European Union (EU), it imposes obligations on organizations anywhere, as long as they target or collect data relating to individuals in the EU. The regulation entered into force on May 25, 2018. The GDPR will impose stiff fines on those who violate its privacy and security standards, with penalties reaching tens of millions of euros.

With the GDPR, Europe is signaling its strong stance on data privacy and security at a time when more people are entrusting their personal data to cloud services and breaches are an everyday occurrence. The regulation itself is large, far-reaching, and rather light on detail, making GDPR compliance a daunting prospect, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

How can GDPR affect my website?

It affects companies or freelancers, also the processing of data in processes with third parties. It influences the treatment of any data. The EU wants to unify the laws that guarantee data protection in the member states.

What happens if I don’t comply with the GDPR?

Prevent doing business in the EU until you adapt. Fines are imposed on companies of any size (even self-employed). Fines amount to 4% of your annual turnover. Fines are imposed even if there is no actual data loss.

Does my business need to comply with the GDPR?

Any company or self-employed person is obliged to comply with the new data protection regulations as of May 25, 2018. Each company is different and therefore has its characteristics, they have to take measures to avoid sanctions.
